How To Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft prevention should be practised by everyone, although it is probably impossible to completely protect yourself. There is just too much information about yourself and your financial arrangements in the computer systems of government, financial institutions, your employer and merchants, to expect it to remain completely confidential.

Accidents do happen and confidential information gets leaked; dishonest employees take note of personal data; a shop assistant indiscreetly quotes your credit card details on the telephone within earshot of other customers, and so on.

The potential is there for any of us to become a victim of identity theft. Some things we cannot prevent - like the dishonest attempts of others to gain our personal details. What we can do, and what is essential that we do, is to take as many precautions as possible to prevent our personal data falling into the wrong hands.
