Identity Theft. Don't Make This Mistake.
Although there is now a greater awareness
of identity theft and associated fraud than a few years ago,
people are still too complacent about the problem and need to
be more vigilant.
Although identity theft has been made a criminal offence in
the USA, this is not the case in the UK. The Police investigate
a very small number of cases because identity theft or fraud is
not yet a criminal offence. Consequently, we are targeted by
organised crime and terror groups who use identity theft as a
means of involvement in illegal immigration, benefits fraud,
drug running, sex offences, and wholesale fraud against the
public and the State.
If you become a victim of ID theft in the UK you are going
to have to do a lot of the work of restoring your good name
yourself, because the law, as it stands, tends to view the
bank, or credit card company or merchant as the ‘victim’ as
they are the ones who actually incur a financial loss.
Your name may have been compromised, and your ability to
gain credit, or credit at competitive rates of interest
diminished or rendered impossible, but the financial
institutions lose money, so they are seen as the true victims.
Unfair, but the reality at the moment.
The biggest mistake anyone can make, is in thinking that it
won't happen to them. It can happen to anyone, anywhere.
To minimise your chance of becoming a victim of identity
theft, you should habitually follow the tips given on this
website to protect your personal information.
